Being able to specify the default size of gnome-terminal would be nice.

After searching a bit, I found the following references:

Normally, one would use the --geometry=WxH flag to the default .desktop file or perhaps also custom .desktop files. I don't like this solution and would prefer a more general solution. I therefor propose that we add the gnome-terminal-launcher into FL2 GNOME Edition and add a FAQ entry on how to use it.

GNOME package - assigning to Ken

The optimal way to handle this is to simple change the default value of the shipped GConf key via a patch.

Will,

Does your (proposal for a) solution handle the case where I want one default resolution and you want another? AFAICT your solution is still a 'one size fits all' solution - just with a different size? Or am I misunderstanding you?

The whole point with gnome-tla is to let users set up their gnome-terminal the way they want in a general way without having to mess around with gconf-editor and every .desktop file in sight. I'm currently fiddling around with it to see if it makes sense to package it.

Here's a workaround that does what it says on the tin (courtesy codealpha.net):
Set the default gnome-terminal size

1. Open Terminal.
2. Type :

gksudo gedit /usr/share/vte/termcap/xterm

3. Enter your password (root password) if necessary.
4. Find something like that (yours must be different, just look around line 10):

:co#80:it#8:li#24:\

5. Change the first and last number, for example to set the default size to 100 columns x 42 lines:

:co#100:it#8:li#42:\

6. Save.
7. Close every Terminal.
8. Open a new Terminal, Enjoy!

It's pointless to expect this to be fixed.

I've added a workaround that works fine for me instead.

I wonder how I get rid of this one.

Apparently, gnome-terminal-2.30.x supports setting the default size in a profile. Yay!

Well, what do you know. The feature was punted to gnome-terminal-2.32.0, but there it works.

Finally!
