I just noticed that if I set the desktop effects to 3D, the next time I boot/reboot, Compiz is no longer running even though it's still checked in the desktop effects dialog window and I have no titlebars. I have to uncheck, then re-check it to enable it. Also, sometimes Compiz works, other times it either reboots my Mac or freezes it.

oops. well it does except as I mentioned it can crash VirtualBox and my Mac when I try and select metacity then Compiz. But not always. I really am puzzled by intermittent problems such as this.

Louis, could you try updateall and see if compiz starts across reboots?

As for the crashing, it's probably because of virtualbox. The graphics driver may not be perfect. And, did you have the guest tools installed? (For foresight you could install the "virtualbox-guest" package and don't have to compile it yourself).

it seems to be working now. I did have it working by adding compiz and emerald to the startup applications but it seems that's not necessary now. and yes, I have the 4.0.2 guest additions installed from the VB dropdown menu. I'm not sure if you have your own or not but even if you did. I'm not sure I know how to uninstall the ones that are already there.

I don't know if it's related or not but when I resize a window I get a 1/2" or so white border flashing around the window as I resize it.
